Singing In The Rain
The shower; unless you’ve been scarred by Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho, for most people it’s a place of solitude and relaxation. And, if you woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning, it’s a sure way to get your day back on track.
Sing until your heart's content!
But did you know there’s something you can do in the shower that’ll take that positive experience to a whole new level? Just get in, turn on the water, grab the showerhead and start belting out your favourite tune.
Singing helps us to connect to our current situations, express emotion in a healthy way and many other things that make us feel like we’re on top of the world. And, doing it in the shower allows us to miss that high note without worrying about critical appraisal – it’s a safe place to really let go.
And, there is plenty of good science to support the stress relieving potential of singing too.
Singing actually has plenty of physical benefits. The most common, and possibly the most well known, is stress relief. According to Carlos Fletes at SingFit, Immunoglobulin A, an antibody that benefits the immune system, increases when the mind is exposed to music or effected by singing.
Singing also releases dopamine, the hormone in charge of keeping you happy. When dopamine is released, it helps relieve stress, which in turn releases Immunoglobulin A, boosting the immune system and decreasing stress levels from a different angle.
Plus, while singing helps reduce stress and makes you feel better, singing also relieves anxiety. When singing, the vibrations that pulsate through your body help release endorphins that are associated with pleasure, as well as oxytocin, a hormone that helps relieve anxiety as well as stress.
Who knew? Well, apparently quite a lot of people. According to Spotify’s CEO, Daniel Ek. There are over 39 000 active playlists named ‘Shower’ and each morning these playlists get around 550 000 streams – no pun intended.
What are all of these people singing when they’re scrubbing their bits to a pitter-patter backing track? Here are Spotify’s top 20.
So, whatever your taste in music, whether it’s Rihanna or Incy Wincy Spider, grab a towel and some scented shower gel and get your groove on!
