Good Vibrations

Dancing is probably the most expressive art form there is. But, for many of us, hitting the dance floor can conjure up all kinds of anxieties. Which is ironic when you consider all the positive benefits there are to getting out on the dance floor.

Well known benefits of ‘cutting the carpet’ can include weight loss, an increase in flexibility, better balance, and some reports even suggest it can boost your memory! Not bad when you consider that more often than not it includes a night out on the town too!

Above all, it’s just jolly good fun. And the upside of that is immeasurable.

To get you in the mood to groove, here are five of the most iconic dance scenes from popular movies. Enjoy.

Pulp Fiction – The Diner

When John Travolta’s Vincent Vega reluctantly stepped onto the floor of Jack Rabbit Slims with Uma Thurman, Hollywood’s then forgotten man reminded everyone that he still had the moves.

Footloose – Angry Dancing

Kevin Bacon’s teen angst came to the fore in this cult classic. Until now, few had ever thought you could get so angry you’d want to dance! But, it clearly worked and he exits that steel mill feeling like a weight had been lifted off his shoulders!

Dirty Dancing – Nobody Puts Baby In The Corner

Probably most peoples’ favourite dance scene of all-time. Often mimicked, never bettered, Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Gray leapt into the film history books and left us in no doubt that “Nobody puts Baby in the corner!”

Napoleon Dynamite – Vote For Pedro

If you’ve ever been the underdog, you’ll love this scene from the strangely hypnotic Napoleon Dynamite. It just goes to show that you can be so terribly bad at dancing that you’re actually quite good. This boogie is for real!

Little Miss Sunshine – Super Freak

Just when it appears as if nothing can bring Little Olive’s dysfunctional family together she busts out a “Super Freak” routine that destroys the competition at a local talent contest. They may have their differences, but they’ll always agree that when Rick James is on, it’s time to get down.

A Little Quiet Time Goes A Long Way

Meditation is often mistakenly linked to temples full of monks or stoned hippies sitting in circles at mountain retreats. In fact, its much more broadly practiced by regular people every day and its benefits have far reaching effects.

When assessing more than 3000 studies of meditation and its effects, just a modest amount of focused quiet time has been shown to reduce anxiety, diminish symptoms associated with panic disorders and regulate moods.

The upside of meditation is plain to see. And, you can do it just about anywhere. Here are three core benefits to regular meditation.

Emotional Well-being

Only a small amount of daily meditation has been shown to reduce worry, anxiety & impulsivity. It also lessens stress, fear, loneliness & depression while enhancing self-esteem & self-acceptance. Further benefits include increased optimism, relaxation & awareness and a noticeable improvement in mood & emotional intelligence.

Healthier Body

There are well-documented physical benefits too as meditation has been known to improve immune system & energy levels by optimizing your breathing & heart rate, reducing blood pressure lessening issues associated with the heart & brain while simultaneously improving vitality and increasing longevity.

Let Them Eat Cake

For more than 30 years, 9 women have been getting together at 4am each morning with one goal; to brighten someone’s day through baking. They were so secretive that not even there their husbands knew about it!

Affectionately known as the 9 Nanas, these women from West Tennessee, not far from Graceland, have been baking pound cakes and sending them to people in need for more than three decades.

It all started when one of them, Mama Ruth, started baking and sending her special pound cakes to people who had recently lost a loved one. She’d simply read the obituaries in the local newspaper and then start baking.

But, once the cat was out of the bag, their children suggested that they start selling the pound cakes online. And, before they knew it, they were getting orders for more than one hundred a day!

And, true to their original intentions, they use the proceeds to support their local community. In fact, over the past 35 years the 9 Nana’s have donated more than $900 000 to local community projects.

Recently they donated more than $5,000 of pillows, linen and personal care products to a shelter for survivors of domestic violence. And this August, they’ll celebrate their second consecutive “Happiness Happens Month” by sending tokens of their appreciation to one person in every state who has made a difference in their own community.
